Bocconi Admissions Changes 2027/28: Strategy for International Applicants

9 Min. Lesezeit

For international students targeting a Bocconi bachelor’s degree in the 2027/28 academic year, the most important change is the loss of a regular spring safety net. Bocconi now lists only two standard selection sessions for international applicants: Early, from 2 to 29 September 2026, and Winter, from 25 November 2026 to 26 January 2027. In the previous 2026/27 cycle, the university’s published process included Early, Winter and Spring sessions. The practical consequence is simple: an international applicant who misses Winter cannot assume that another regular round will open later in 2027.

The best strategy is therefore to work backwards from the application deadline, secure a usable test result well before the relevant webtesting closure and treat Winter as the final regular opportunity rather than a relaxed second attempt. This guide explains what has changed, what has not, and how to build a realistic 2026 plan without relying on rumours about cut-offs or an unannounced additional round.

The 2027/28 changes at a glance

Regular rounds. The 2026/27 international process showed Early, Winter and Spring. For 2027/28, Bocconi lists only Early and Winter. Do not plan around a spring application.

Last application deadline. The final regular international round now closes on 26 January 2027 at 3:00 p.m. Italian time. Finish tests and documents earlier.

Online test window. International applicants can purchase and book Bocconi test attempts from 13 July 2026 to 19 January 2027. The last stated Winter test date is 21 January; leaving the test until then gives almost no recovery time.

Programme areas. Undergraduate School and Law School have separate applications, preference lists and rankings. Applicants considering both need to apply to each track.

International places. Up to 50–55% of places in English-taught programmes may be reserved for international applicants and that it may balance offers in an exceptionally crowded round. Nationality is not a scoring tactic; timing and genuine programme order are the controllable choices.

The change in the number of sessions is confirmed. The other points above are current 2027/28 rules that matter more under the compressed calendar; they are not necessarily new. Our advice is to plan around the published dates and protect time for test results, documents and final submission.

What has not changed: the ranking is still driven by test and GPA

Bocconi’s regular 2027/28 bachelor selection remains unusually transparent about the scored components. The selection test contributes 55% and the GPA from the third-last and second-last years of secondary school contributes 45%. These are the only two scored evaluation elements. Recommendation letters, motivation letters, CVs, résumés and extracurricular evidence are not considered in the regular ranking.

That distinction protects applicants from spending scarce time on the wrong work. A polished personal statement cannot compensate for an avoidably weak test attempt because there is no personal statement score in this route. By the same logic, test preparation cannot erase the school record: the 45% GPA component remains fixed once the relevant school years are complete.

For Undergraduate School programmes, the accepted tests are the regular Bocconi Online Test, SAT and ACT. The Bocconi Online Test – Law and LSAT are additional options only for Law School programmes. The regular Bocconi test, SAT and ACT can also be used for Law, but choosing a law-specific test restricts the application to the legal area. Applicants should decide which programme families they genuinely want before purchasing a test.

Why the missing international Spring Session changes the plan

Under the older three-session rhythm, an unsuccessful international applicant could still consider a regular spring application. For 2027/28, Bocconi’s international admissions page identifies Early and Winter only and describes Winter as the subsequent last round. Italian applicants still have a Spring Session, but international applicants should not transfer that calendar to their own category.

This makes the Early Session more valuable even though applying early is not a guarantee. We recommend applying as soon as you have a strong file: an earlier decision can leave more time to organise funding and, for non-EU applicants, a visa. Early submission does not guarantee admission. An Early rejection also leaves Winter available, provided the applicant submits a completely new application and pays the relevant fee again.

Early is not automatically the correct choice when the score is clearly below an applicant’s demonstrated potential. The rational comparison is between two concrete files, not between the words “early” and “winter”:

  1. the score and documents that can be submitted by 29 September 2026; and

  2. the realistically improved score and fully checked documents that can be submitted by 26 January 2027.

An applicant who already has a strong valid test result gains little by delaying merely to perfect materials that are not scored. An applicant whose diagnostic evidence shows a large, achievable test improvement may reasonably target Winter. The risk is that Winter is the final regular round and the Bocconi test window for international candidates closes before the application itself.

A test strategy built around decision dates, not the final deadline

For the 2027/28 cycle, international applicants may purchase and book Bocconi Online Test attempts from 13 July 2026 to 19 January 2027. The last stated test dates are 24 September 2026 for Early and 21 January 2027 for Winter, subject to availability and booking at least 48 hours in advance. The score report is normally available within 48 hours.

Those dates are administrative limits, not sensible target dates. A robust plan uses three earlier milestones:

  • a first scored attempt early enough to diagnose weaknesses;

  • a decision date on whether a retake is justified; and

  • a personal final test date that still leaves time for the score report, a technical incident and complete submission.Applicants may take up to four attempts per test type during the academic-year window. Attempts cannot be taken on the same day or on consecutive days, and each Bocconi test attempt costs €60. Four available attempts do not make four rushed attempts a good strategy. A retake is valuable only when the score report identifies a trainable weakness and the next attempt follows targeted practice.

The regular test has a formal minimum usable total score, but clearing a minimum is not the same as being competitive in a ranking. There is no published universal admission cut-off for every programme and round. Programme demand, available places, applicant performance, GPA and preference order all affect the outcome. Treat any unofficial “safe score” as anecdotal unless Bocconi publishes it for the relevant route.

Applicants with more than one accepted test type may submit multiple score reports. The online portal selects the highest suitable result for the final ranking. This creates a legitimate portfolio strategy: an applicant can compare a Bocconi result with an SAT or ACT result rather than assuming one format will always be superior. SAT applicants must also designate Bocconi University as a score recipient through College Board by the application deadline, even if Bocconi has not yet received the score electronically at that moment.

Use the GPA correctly because it accounts for 45%

The relevant school record is not the final-year forecast. The selection uses the final grades from the third-last and second-last years of secondary school. Applicants provide a final GPA where one is officially available or enter the relevant grades into the application calculator, which converts the record to a ten-point scale.

Physical education, behaviour and religion are excluded. Other subjects should not be selectively omitted simply because they lower the average. The transcripts must be official, and the document rules depend on their language and the structure of the school system. If a required annual transcript does not exist in that system, the applicant should follow Bocconi’s stated substitute-document procedure rather than inventing an average.

This is an area for accuracy, not optimisation theatre. Recalculate the portal entry independently, use the exact school-year documents Bocconi requests and leave time for the school to issue confirmations or translations. A data-entry error in a component worth 45% is more consequential than a beautifully formatted CV that the regular selection will not score.

Programme preferences are part of the allocation strategy

International applicants can list up to four Undergraduate School programmes in one application and up to two Law School programmes in the separate legal application. Bocconi builds one international ranking for the Undergraduate School area and another for the Law School area. Offers are then allocated in descending ranking order, taking the applicant’s programme preferences and remaining places into account.

The strongest preference strategy is therefore truthful ordering. Put the programme you most want first. Moving a genuine first choice down because it is assumed to be more competitive can produce an offer to a lower preference before the applicant’s real choice is considered under the published allocation logic. At the same time, every listed option should be one the applicant would actually accept.

The World Bachelor in Business and the HEC–Bocconi Double Degree have dedicated procedures and timelines. They should not be treated as ordinary fifth or sixth preferences. Transfer applicants requesting recognition of university credits also follow a dedicated selection route. Before applying, classify the intended programme correctly; otherwise, an apparently complete calendar may belong to the wrong process.

How to interpret Bocconi’s international-place and diversity wording

For English-taught programmes, Up to 50–55% of places may be reserved for international applicants. In an exceptionally crowded round, offers may be balanced to preserve diversity in applicants’ profiles, backgrounds and nationality.

This does not turn the regular application into a holistic essay competition. The academic evaluation is based on the 55% test and 45% GPA components. The safest reading is that test and GPA determine the academic ranking, while capacity allocation and the university’s stated diversity objective can affect offers in a heavily subscribed round. No formula is published that lets an individual applicant calculate this effect.

Do not try to “optimise” nationality or background through wording. They are facts, not application tactics. The controllable levers remain the test result, accurate GPA data, timely application, correct applicant category and honest programme order.

Two practical application plans for 2026

Plan A: apply in the Early Session

This route fits an applicant who already holds a valid, credible score and can submit accurate documents by 29 September 2026 at 3:00 p.m. Italian time. Confirm the applicant category, check the intended programme area, enter the GPA from the correct school years, upload the test report and order the preferences. Paying the €100 application fee is not enough: the application must be confirmed and submitted before the deadline.

If the result is non-admission, review the score report and ranking context before planning Winter. A new Winter application is required. Reusing an existing score is possible, but the application does not carry over automatically.

Plan B: target the Winter Session deliberately

This route fits an applicant who needs a material test improvement or who could not assemble a reliable Early file. Set the personal final test date before Bocconi’s last stated date of 21 January 2027. Complete the school-document and GPA work during autumn rather than waiting for the portal deadline. The Winter application runs from 25 November 2026 to 26 January 2027 at 3:00 p.m. Italian time.

Because there is no regular international Spring Session, Winter should include contingency time. Book early enough to avoid sold-out dates, preserve the technical-support record if a proctored test is interrupted and verify that the score report selected in Apply2B is the intended one. A test purchase does not register the applicant for a selection session.

Common 2027/28 strategy errors

  • Assuming there will be a Spring Session for international applicants. The published regular international calendar lists only Early and Winter.

  • Taking the last possible test as the default plan. Availability, the 48-hour booking rule, score-report timing and technical incidents all create avoidable risk.

  • Writing materials that are not scored. Motivation letters, recommendation letters and CVs do not improve the regular 55/45 ranking.

  • Using the wrong Bocconi test profile. Undergraduate, Law and Graduate tests are different products with different uses.

  • Treating 17 points as an admission target. A usable score threshold is not a programme-specific competitive cut-off.

  • Copying the Italian applicant calendar. Category determines available rounds and webtesting dates.

  • Listing programmes tactically rather than honestly. Preference order is used when places are assigned.

  • Forgetting the final submission step. A paid or partially completed Apply2B form is not a submitted application.

What happens after the ranking decision

Results are scheduled for mid-November 2026 for Early and mid-March 2027 for Winter. A successful applicant then has a limited enrollment period to accept the offered programme, make the required payment, meet the language requirement and later provide the qualifying secondary-school diploma. Bocconi’s overview describes an enrollment window of approximately three weeks, but the applicant should follow the dates in the actual offer and the updated 2027/28 enrollment page.

A waiting-list outcome is not an admission offer. Bocconi may contact wait-listed applicants only if places remain after enrollment, so other university deadlines should continue to be managed. Non-admitted Early applicants can apply again in Winter. Once Winter closes, however, international applicants should not assume that a regular third opportunity will appear.

The core 2027/28 strategy is therefore disciplined rather than speculative: choose the correct route, measure the test opportunity realistically, protect the 45% GPA submission from errors, rank programmes by genuine preference and finish before the administrative limits. The compressed two-session calendar rewards applicants who make these decisions in 2026 rather than postponing them until spring 2027.
